Artillery, helicopters pound Taliban hideouts
PESHAWAR: Artillery guns and helicopter gunships pounded suspected Taliban hideouts on Saturday after they attacked a security check-post in North Waziristan, local sources said. No casualties were reported. Military spokesman Maj-Gen Shaukat Sultan said the security forces “retaliated” after seven rockets were fired at the Thall check-post. Residents said that heavy artillery guns and gunship helicopters pounded the area hours after the attack, damaging seven houses, but no details were available about civilian casualties. Pro-Taliban local militants also attacked a tribal police check-post on a road leading towards the Afghan border, beating up the cops and stealing their weapons. Meanwhile, a pro-government tribal elder escaped an assassination attempt near Wana in South Waziristan, eyewitnesses said. The attack on Malik Syed Abbas Khan, however, resulted in injuries to seven other passengers in a private van, they added. staff report
